TOUR TO CITTADELLA
Visit Cittadella to discover one of the walled cities of Veneto, the only one in Europe with a fully walkable and well-preserved patrol walkway.
The earliest foundations of Cittadella's walls date back to the 3rd century when the Romans erected the ancient walls along the Roman road Postumia, an important artery that connected Aquileia with Genoa across all of northern Italy.
Then between the 12th and 13th centuries, when the expansionist aims of powerful Padua brought it into conflict with Treviso and Vicenza, the Paduans decided to fortify it with a massive defensive wall.
With this tour in Cittadella, you can walk the walls that in the Middle Ages, were impassable limits for militias everywhere.
They have an average thickness of 2.10 meters and four access gates at the four cardinal points, named: Porta Padovana, Porta Bassanese, Porta Trevisana and Porta Vicentina, all of which turn to the city from which they take their name (Padova, Bassano, Treviso and Vicenza).
Accompanied by the local tour guide you will then walk along the patrol walkway and enjoy the view of the city from above, just as the militiamen did during their guard duty in medieval times.
Descending into the center, step by step, you will then admire the city's important monuments: The Captain's House, where the Captain of the Guards used to reside, with original frescoes inside dating back to the 16th century; the Tower of Malta, whose terrifying tortures at the time of the tyrant Ezzelino III da Romano are recounted, even mentioned by Dante in the Divine Comedy; the Praetorian Palace, the former seat of the Potestà of the city of Padua; the Teatro Sociale, whose façade is attributed to the well-known Giuseppe Jappelli; and the Cathedral with the Pinacoteca, which houses works by Palma il Giovane.
The experience includes:
• Walk through Cittadella
• Walk on the Ronda Walkway
• Roundtrip transfer by minivan from the hotel
• Traditional Italian life with your local guide
• Insurance and technical organization by certified travel agency
